Big Splash celebrates Newport Now sponsorship

With two days to go, the hype of this year’s Big Splash has begun.

Mr & Mrs Clark caused a bit of mayhem at Westgate Square this morning, drumming up some support for the weekend’s festival.

During Saturday 22 July and Sunday 23 July, the city centre will be transformed with pop-up loud, surprising, intriguing and wonderful live music and street theatre, which will create one large outdoor stage!

Mr & Mrs Clark were canvassing support for their electioneering show, which they will be performing at the Big Splash on Sunday 23 July at 11.45am, 2.30pm & 4.30pm. Electioneering is the plight of two politically ambitious characters applying the fictitious self-help CD ‘A Dummy’s Guide to Becoming a Successful Politician’ in a hilarious attempt to improve their standing with the public.

Gareth Clark from Mr & Mrs Clark said; "We live and work in Newport and love any opportunity to connect with people. Electioneering, our show for the Big Splash, is a satirical look at how politicians conduct themselves in public and we are very happy to be doing this as part of the festival."

Thanks to sponsorship from Newport NOW, this year’s festival has been able to introduce three new performance areas on Commercial Street, on the corner of Llanarth Street, the corner of Austin Friars and Westgate Square.

Newport NOW manager Kevin Ward said: "Today was about letting people know more about the Big Splash this weekend but also about our involvement in it. We've sponsored the Big Splash for the first time this year and Newport NOW's involvement is to have performances and parts of the festival in the traditional part of the city centre. It's just a way of making sure that the Big Splash involves as much of the city centre as possible."

Over twenty top class performing companies from across the UK and beyond will be bringing over fifty free street theatre shows to the city centre, from circus, slapstick, dance, and fantastic walkabouts. Performers including Newport’s own Mr & Mrs Clark and Tin Shed Theatre, alongside Cirque du Kaka, Puppets with Guts and Kapow Dance will be performing at six main Big Splash zones of entertainment in five locations; The Riverfront Theatre & Arts Centre, Friars Walk, Kingsway Shopping Centre, Newport NOW zone along Commercial Street and the river walkway between the University and the Red Wave.

Thanks to funding from Newport Live, Newport City Council and the Arts Council of Wales and sponsorship from Friars Walk, Kingsway Centre, Newport NOW and Western Power Distribution, the family street theatre festival, Big Splash will once again entertain thousands of people and take over Newport city centre from Saturday 22 to Sunday 23 July 2017.
