City centre road closure for Queen's Baton Relay on September 617/08/2017
The Queen's Baton Relay will be travelling through Newport city centre on the morning of Wednesday, September 6.
The Commonwealth Games has been held every four years since 1930 apart from during the war. The baton will visit a total of 71 Nations and Territories over a period of 388 days leading up to the Games held in the Gold Coast in 2018.
The Baton will arrive in the city at 8am and will travel down Stephenson Street to the Transporter Bridge and will be taken across the River Usk by gondola to the West side of Newport. The baton will then be taken by car to Pillgwenlly Primary School where a special assembly will take place.
The baton bearers will then start along Capel Crescent at approximately 9.05am, Commercial Road, cross Cardiff Road against the flow of traffic to Commercial Street. It will then travel the length of the pedestrianised area of Commercial Street to its junction with Corn Street. The baton will then turn right onto Upper Dock Street and turn left into Friars Walk Mall. It will continue its journey to John Frost Square where the baton will be on public display from 9.30am to 10.30am when it will be taken to the Newport Centre where pupils from five local primary schools will participate in taster sessions from the Commonwealth Games.
Residents and businesses will be able to see the Baton and are encouraged to come out to support the relay when it travels along Commercial Road and Commercial Street on its journey to John Frost Square. Baton bearers have been nominated from local Newport sporting clubs and there will be 15 in total.
A rolling road closure will be operated whilst the baton travels along Capel Crescent, Corporation Road, Cardiff Road and the start of Commercial Street.
However, a road closure will be in place on Commercial Street from its junction with Hill Street up to and including Corn Street. There will also be no vehicular access on Charles Street from its junction adjacent to the Job Centre to Commercial Street. The road closure will be in place from 8am through to 10am.
