Happy New Year to all Newport city centre businesses - let's all hope 2017 is a prosperous one. I was extremely pleased that as a Business Improvement District we really did start delivering last year, especially around marketing and events, with our best Christmas event for years. The Ambassador programme is proving very popular with visitors and businesses alike, they have supported traders and played and active role in helping reduce anti-social behaviour. Newport Now has campaigned relentlessly to get NCC and Gwent Police to tackle issues and I'm pleased to say there was a significant improvement in the run up to Christmas - let's maintain this to make the city centre as attractive as possible.

Despite gloomy national forecasts for 2017, I like to remain positive about the high street, but would still urge all BID members to take advantage of cost saving projects we are rolling out, such as the collective purchasing scheme. It is such a good opportunity to reduce energy costs and merchant fees. Many have already participated and are saving literally thousands of pounds at absolutely no cost. We are also piloting the small shop front improvement grant scheme which you can also read about in this edition. Plus look out for some exciting events for 2017. Best wishes to all for the New Year.

This is our final newsletter of the year, but a lot to report on and plenty to look forward to. The key event is of course our Christmas Lights switch on, with pop stars, DJs, local talent and, of course, Santa himself taking to the big stage in the city centre to put a real sparkle into our countdown to Christmas. We're all hoping for some bumper crowds in town to get the Christmas trade off to the best possible start.

And there were big crowds in Newport for the Council's annual Food Festival, despite the stormy weather, and let's hope we are able to sustain the event for next year.

Let's hope that business is good for us all this Christmas period, as we wish you a fantastic festive time, and a healthy and prosperous New Year for everyone.
